Retinal Imaging & OCT
Located inside and to the back of the eye, the retina can reveal early warning signs of serious conditions including macular degeneration, diabetes, glaucoma, retinal and vitreous detachments and even cancer.
We offer enhanced eye examinations that are entirely tailored to you.
Our Optomap ultra-wide digital retinal imaging system forms part of our enhanced eye examination, and helps us assess the overall health of your eyes. The test is quick and painless, and doesn’t usually require dilation drops being used.
Less advanced methods of imaging – including via direct opthalmoscope, slit lamp and fundus camera view – only reveal around 10-15% of the retina, compared to the 80% achievable with a panoramic Optomap photograph. A powerful diagnostic tool, the ultra-wide imaging system enables us to dedicate more time to talking you through your eye health and ensuring you understand exactly what your results mean.
Using the latest OCT technology, we can provide an in-depth assessment of your retinal health.
To enhance the retinal care we offer our patients, we have invested in Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) equipment – a non-invasive type of scan that’s suitable for people of all ages. Similar to an ultrasound in the depth of imaging it can provide, OCT uses light to provide a three-dimensional picture of the retina – the inside back surface of your eye.
Your retina is made up of several different layers. If you imagine it to be like a cake, a digital retinal photo is like viewing icing from above without being able to see what is inside. An OCT scan provides a view into the different layers of the eye, which is like looking at a slice of the cake from the side. So, rather than simply enabling us to see the surface, the simple three-dimensional scan uses light to allow us to see deep inside too – without any discomfort!
Retinal photographs don’t always show the whole story, and an OCT can reveal certain irreversible conditions, which are far more treatable when caught in the early stages. Rather than having to closely analyse the difference between past and present photographs, advanced OCT technology also provides more definitive results, enabling us to compare measurable data points and look at retinal tissue in more detail.

IN FOCUS

The Optomap is the only test that captures more than 80% of your retina in one panoramic image. The unique optomap ultra-wide view helps detect early signs of retinal disease more effectively and efficiently than with traditional eye examination alone. The test is fast and pain-free and nothing touches your eye.
