Age-related macular degeneration screening
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that affects many people as they get older, causing central vision to be lost over time.
Although it is painless, degeneration causes blurred vision when you focus straight ahead, making it increasingly difficult to read, identify colours and recognise faces.
Whilst it can sometimes occur rapidly, the condition is usually gradual and peripheral vision is not affected, meaning that it does not cause total blindness. This also means it can go undetected.
There are two kinds of age-related macular degeneration:
Dry AMD
This occurs when a build-up of deposits damages the cells of the macula, causing gradual vision loss over a number of years. Accounting for around 90% of cases, dry AMD is the most common and least serious variety, but 1 in 10 of these will go on to develop wet AMD.
Wet AMD
Also referred to as neovascular AMD, this type develops when abnormal blood vessels form under the macula and cause damage to its cells. More serious than dry AMD, vision can deteriorate in a matter of days if the condition goes untreated.
We can spot the early signs of age-related macular degeneration,
and recommend how to optimise your vision
Around 1 in 10 people over the age of 65 have some degree of AMD, and currently there is no cure for either variation.
However, we are committed to helping you make the most of your remaining vision, and our expert optometrists can carry out tests and fit you with specialist magnifying aids to suit your needs and optimise your sight.
